Help Wanted : Reference Assistant, Shelver

Webster Groves Public Library is hiring for two positions! Position: Reference Assistant
Reports to: Reference Department Head
Hourly Rate of Pay: $15.11
Position Summary
Responsible for working the reference desk, answering patron questions, assisting with technology, educating and training the public on library resources, and providing excellent customer service.
Duties
- Run the Reference Desk on assigned shifts.
- Assist Library patrons with a range of information needs, including use of our online catalog, use of our public computers, reading suggestions, use of the various online resources available on our web site, and VHS tape conversions to digital format.
- Assist patrons with telephone requests for information.
- Assist the Department Head with document digitization and other special projects.
- As a certified United States Passport Acceptance Agent, process passport application appointments scheduled during a given shift.
- Other duties as assigned, such as shelving and weeding the library’s collection.
Qualifications
- Previous library or customer service experience.
- High school diploma.
- Excellent computer skills, including knowledge of MS Office, Adobe, Google Docs and web browsers (e.g., Chrome, Firefox, Edge).
- Commitment to high level of customer service. Must be willing to work cooperatively with and around people of all ages.
- Good judgement with analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to exercise initiative and independent judgment.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
- Eligible to be certified as a passport acceptance agent.
- Effective oral and written communication skills.
- Be willing to acquire knowledge of new technology available in the library and have the ability to translate that knowledge to patrons and fellow staff members.
- A valid driver’s license and background check are required.
Essential Physical Abilities and Attendance
- Regularly required to stand for up to 4 hours at a time, lift materials or push carts up to 30 lbs. and reach high or low to access or return materials to designated places.
- Ability to work assigned shifts, which will include weekday evenings and weekends. Provide adequate notice to the Department Head when time off is needed.
Example Schedule
- Week 1: Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday 4:30pm – 9:00pm, Saturday 8:30am – 12:30pm
- Week 2: Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday 4:30 – 9:00pm; Friday 12:30pm – 4:30pm; Sunday 1:30pm – 5:00pm (Sundays are paid at time and a half.)

Position: Shelver
Reports to: Circulation Supervisor
Hourly Rate of Pay: $13.75
Position Summary
Responsible for accurately shelving and maintaining the organization of shelved library materials.
Duties
- Accurately shelve, shift, and organize library materials.
- Perform regular shelf maintenance, including reading and straightening assigned sections.
- Retrieve requested materials and complete customer item request lists.
- Assist with processing incoming and outgoing deliveries.
- Monitor and empty outdoor book drops.
- Help with library opening and closing procedures.
- Promote a welcoming and respectful atmosphere for all patrons.
Qualifications
- 16 years old or older.
- Able to arrange items in a certain order according to a specific set of rules.
- Work independently with minimal supervision.
- Familiarity with Dewey Decimal Classification System.
- Able to use a PC, word processing software, email and other basic computer technology.
- No prior library experience or training, however, previous library volunteer experience is a plus.
